CLIFFHANGER explores the dynamic forces that shape both landscapes and media through the operation of a speculative leisure machine.
James Hutton’s foundational geological text “The Theory of the Earth” drives an artistic process to reimagine ideas of resource extraction.

Visitors operating the leisure machine will in effect ‘play’ Hutton's text by fragmenting and reassembling it.This action will produce a live stream of recombined language feeding directly into a computer system, converting the fragments into prompts for generating fake landscape images via open and locally hosted machine learning software (no cloud API). Forming a counterpoint to these pristine synthetic scenes, the actions of the leisure machine will also drive an abstract film narrative and sound score composed from video sequences shot in a quarry in Finnmark in the Norwegian Arctic, portraying a mountain landscape being prised apart and dismantled.

A DISSONANT LANDSCAPE – in a cultural moment where the techno-optimism of the recent past has shifted towards technological fatalism, AI has become both a coping mechanism and a negative symbol of environmental entanglement.
Leon Festinger’s theory of cognitive dissonance illuminates this tension: while AI is often promoted for its innovation, productivity, and convenience, its environmental and social costs are frequently rationalised or ignored. This tension underpins the project’s conceptual inquiry and drives its critical engagement with contemporary socio-technical systems.

CLIFFHANGER is a collaborative project by intermedia artist Bruce Gilchrist, artist-filmmaker Svein Flygari Johansen, and software developer Jonny Bradley that seeks to communicate a complex narrative across artistic, environmental, and technological systems. The project proposes a combinatorial method and conceptual framework to explore accessible ways of discussing and responding to a rapidly emerging AI-driven culture adversely impacting nature.

Human and machine productivity is a central concern in Stop Searching Else Loop Forever, but rather than one being yoked to the other and made to march together in time, diverse temporal approaches are used to seek solutions to the same problem. One time system is imported as a library by a computer script, while another is embodied by the artist and influenced by external ‘zeitgeber’ (‘time giver’ from chronobiology). Additionally, as a form of counter current, an interactive work leverage proximity via a sensor to enact a pause – a break in time’s metaphorical flow (something that happens at the smallest scales). All share an iterative looping method to shuffle textual and visual material, but while the machine repeatedly and consistently solves the language game in a matter of seconds (8-20 heartbeats), it remains uncertain whether the artist can achieve even one solution within the four-week timeframe of the exhibition. The slow, monotonous and possibly fruitless cadence of the artist in the gallery is juxtaposed with the relative
lightning speed of the computer, which in its haste, renders each solution illegible. Thi explicit mismatch symbolises the routine coexistence of technology running on inexhaustible ‘epoch time’ – representing the relentless pursuit of growth and technological advancement at any cost – and the human worker constrained by an idiosyncratic biological clock regulated by external cues and social customs.

A Febrile
Standard

Selected as a finalist for the fourth edition of the COCA PROJECT, Two Wild Seas, Taranto, Italy.
A Febrile Standard is a proposal for an outdoor installation informed by personal biography – I was born in Malta to Scottish parents – employing the symbolism of a 'fever flag' to reflect on meaning-making outside imposed, constructed systems like nationalism or colonialism. [...] time and place of birth, in relation to a proposition of identity that I prefer to think of as more related to an alignment of planets and stars, rather than political borders carved out through conflict [...] The ‘fever flag’ is a complex visual metaphor for zoonotic interplay among human culture, non-human organisms and the environment, rendered as a colonial-parasitic symbol.

The Rashomon Effect as a way of thinking about how generative AI alters, distorts, and recasts the factual.
There have been numerous cautionary tales about artificial intelligence presented as a series of effects, including the AI effect, the Eliza effect, and the Clever Hans effect. In the context of generative AI, I‘ve become interested in another effect – the Rashomon effect, popularised through Akira Kurosawa’s film Rashomon. Kurosawa’s film is partly set in a crumbling and derelict city gate symbolising the dissolution of truth in medieval Japan; it describes a series of contradictory events that took place in a forest rendered as a mythical space where mysterious and perhaps unknowable things have taken place.

Common usage of the Rashomon effect describes the phenomenon of the unreliability of eyewitnesses. In academic contexts the effect defines a framework for thinking, knowing, and remembering, which is necessary for understanding situations that are complex and ambiguous. References to the Rashomon effect have become pervasive, entering the lexica of filmmaking, journalism, ethnography, and the judiciary, and are understood as providing an explanatory paradigm for complexity. Thinking about generative AI as a movement through data – from word to abstraction into image – the text-prompt interface of text2image can be conceptualised as a contemporary form of instruction art, where language is prioritised in the making of things. My aim is to create algorithmically manipulated versions of the same image data to express how generative AI alters, distorts, and recasts the factual.

The Transfiguration of Bandit Tajōmaru

Through the Rashomon effect there is a constant displacement and reframing of the way the audience conceives of the relations between things; determining what is real involves a confusion of realities revolving around self-interests︎︎︎

All images have been generated with text2image software using character testimony from Akira Kurosawa’s “Rashomon” as a source for the prompt text.

	Poetics of Garbage
An interactive installation and single screen film that reflexively generated commentary on the shared relationship between humans and garbage.
The Poetics of Garbage project manipulates waste material via
performance, computer vision, object recognition software, and a
language model, translating it into a poetic narrative as an expression
of how trash can be rationalised by a machine to produce language. Plastic Prāyaścitta is a single screen film shot in the streets and hinterlands of Delhi. The process of making the film reflexively generated a commentary on the shared relationship between humans and garbage. By reclaiming trash from the ‘realm of the useless’, it is redesignated with value and transformed into cultural icons integrated into a performance. The
title of the film alludes to the trope of ritualistic pilgrimage, a journey
into the unknown in search of new or expanded meaning. We imagined this sense of altered meaning being
achieved through the actions of the body and its interplay between waste
material and predictive technology.

This is a collaborative project made by Aashna Arora (performance & costume), Bruce Gilchrist (concept, video edit & text generation), Chaitali Kulkarni (software programming) and Thaniya Kanaka Mahalakshmi (narration & language translation) as part of a BeFantastic Beyond Fellowship 2022-23 (India), co-produced by BeFantastic (In), FutureEverything (UK), and supported by the British Council. Music by Traitor.
Cameras: Purva Joshi / Rahul Naag / Jonathan Peters.
Additional language translation: Malvika Jha / Champa Lakshmi.

Smart Hans was incubated during the Deepfake Masterclass at Baltan Laboratories in Eindhoven (NL) under the guidance of Ellen Pearlman from ThoughtWorks Art New York. Based on the story of Clever Hans and the observer-expectancy effect, the project won the Super Artistic AI Award in the ‘Interaction’ category, and the Jury’s Main Prize at Lab30 Festival 2022. Idling-in-the-Unreal (2021) animates digital human puppets using motion capture (mocap) files from the ‘idling’ category, which are then used to stimulate a human-action recognition (HAR) algorithm combined with a language model trained on the work of Michel Foucault to produce a poetic commentary.
